About

I'm Hoshi. Since April 2023 I've owned a four-person, Estonian-built barrel sauna on family land in rural Japan — a 25-minute drive from home, surrounded by vegetable fields and not much else.

This site exists because when I was researching my own purchase, almost everything I found was written by people selling saunas, not people living with them. I paid the tuition — including an electrical upgrade nobody warned me about — so you don't have to. Everything here comes from actual ownership: real costs in real numbers, the maintenance that did and didn't happen, and the mistakes I'd avoid the second time around.

The other half of this site is the part I didn't plan. In Japan, sauna is social culture — totonou, outdoor air bathing, the slow conversations in a cooling barrel after the last round. My sauna has become a gathering place for friends and family, including tattooed friends who are shut out of Japan's public bathhouses. Those rituals rarely get described in English, so I write them down here.

No hype, no miracle-cure claims. Just what I'd tell a friend who asked, "So… should I buy one?"

Start here if you're new.
